The Season of Advent

The Season of Advent soon draws to a close –  tomorrow evening, in fact, with the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord. Here we commemorate the birth of Christ, the fulfilment of Israel’s longing for the One who would    deliver them from the dark forces of this world and lead them triumphantly  to the next.

‘This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds worship and angels sing,’ we sing this time of year. The Child of Bethlehem was no ordinary child. ‘The hopes and fears of all the years’ were met in the coming of Jesus the Christ. Beyond all the lovely words and melodies of the season, there lives this deep and glorious truth. The birth of Christ still sings hope and light into our  darkness. May we be found listening and transformed by its message.

… and from Bishop Robert’s Christmas letter

This Christmas, I hope that the message of the birth of the Son of God, born to change hearts and minds, to bring people back to God and to empower people to be reconciled with each other is a message that will give us all comfort, encouragement and hope.

I wish each of you and your families a very happy Christmas.

Concerning the recent attack in Strasbourg / Concernant l’attentat recent à Strasbourg

The Anglican community of St Alban’s expresses its sorrow and solidarity with all the people of Strasbourg over the tragic events of Tuesday night. Our prayers are joined with those of many others in this hour of grief, particularly for the victims and those who loved them. Such violence has no place in our society. Instead, we seek the love and reconciliation that Jesus taught us and embodied for all the world to see.

We call upon all people of faith and good will to join us – at the invitation of Mgr Luc Ravel, Archbishop of Strasbourg – to a prayer vigil at the Cathedral of Strasbourg on Thursday at 6 pm. It is a time to be together and to remember the One who makes us one

***

Christmas is a time for giving

God so loved the world that he gave his Son
John 3.16
In this holy season, we are more aware of God’s gift of Jesus for the life of the world.
Generosity is at the heart of God’s character. We respond to God’s generosity in many ways, including a commitment to give regularly to the church.
This enables the church to carry out God’s mission here in Strasbourg and beyond.
What can you do?
Make a special thank offering to St Alban’s this Christmas. Any amount is gratefully received.
Make regular donations to St Alban’s over the course of the coming year.
Offer your time and service to the ministries of St Alban’s.
 Did you know that
Our church is entirely self-supporting. We do not receive financial support from the government or from the wider church. In other words, it’s up to us to provide the necessary funds to see that St Alban’s remains a vital witness to the love of God in Christ.  The projected income for 2018, based on the year’s monthly giving, will be 40 000 €, significantly below  what is needed to meet the costs of the Chaplaincy.
The Sunday plate offering accounts for a very small part of our income.  Regular and systematic giving – by all of us – is necessary to meet our expenses.
We can provide you with an annual giving statement for your tax declaration when you give to St Alban’s.
This Christmas … let us give generously

We are presently forming groups of people drawn from different neighbourhood churches that would meet from time to time for a drink, a meal, etc to get to know one another and to share how we each live out our faith in our various church traditions.   Interested? Contact fr Mark for more information.

Bishop’s Advent Appeal 2018

Bishop Robert writes:
This year’s Advent Appeal is to enable St Andrew’s Moscow to equip their church with a kitchen.
St Andrew’s is committed to the work of reconciliation and the building of trust between peoples. It fulfils this key element of our diocesan strategy in a unique and powerful way. It is not putting it too strongly to say that St Andrew’s Church contributes in a small way to the cause of world peace.
The offering and sharing of hospitality is a key part of the life of many of our chaplaincies. St Andrew’s is no exception. But at present, food has to be brought in by parishioners or prepared in the parsonage. St Andrew’s would love to be able to prepare food on site.
A kitchen would further St Andrew’s work of reconciliation. It would strengthen church fellowship. And it would be a place in which some of the orphaned young people who are served by St Andrew’s could be taught how to cook. More details on this are available upon request.
We can all appreciate the importance of food and shared meals as means of furthering mission and outreach. I think the installation of a new kitchen is a great idea, which is worthy of our support.
Please do consider how you can support my Advent Appeal, which this year is for St Andrew’s Moscow.    You can give money to this appeal through your church treasurer, who will forward your gift to the diocesan office.
+ Robert
